However， Qian’s road home was not smooth.
The US government prevented him from leaving the country because they thought he knew too much about US military matters. They put him under house arrest for five years.
In June 1955， Qian wrote a letter to Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai. China and US held talks and the US agreed to set Qian free.
Together with his wife and two children， Qian spent more than a month arriving in China by sea.
“It was the most foolish thing this country ever did，” former US Navy Secretary Dan Kimball later said， “This man equals five divisions(师) in any country. I would have him shot (枪击) rather than agree him to return to China.”
But Qian’s importance went far beyond the military. He built the base for China’s space development.
In 1956， based on Qian’s papers， the Chinese government set up a space industry committee (委员会) .It later became the leading organization for China’s space program.
Under Qian’s leadership， China made plans for developing jet(喷气飞机)and rocket technology. Qian also played an important role in developing the country’s first satellite(人造卫星).
