Dear Mary,
I am writing to tell you something different between London and Beijing.
In our country cars are driven on the left side of the road, but here on the right side. The public transport in Beijing is as convenient as in London. The climate of Beijing is better than that of London, which is fine for long. But London has so many cloudy days. Students here work hard at their lessons and a lot of people can speak English. It’s a pity that students in our country don’t work so hard as the Chinese do. And people in London seldom understand Chinese.
That’s all for today. Please write to me.
Yours lovely,
Peter
Listening text:
(Text 1)
W: What are you looking for, sir?
M: Is Miss Black here?
W: The head teacher of Class 386?
M: Yes. My son is in her class and I’m told he is ill.
W: Oh, so you are here to see him?
M: Yes.
W: What’s his name?
M: Peter White.xkb1.com
W: Oh, he is now in Room 205 of the WestHospital. Go there and everything will be clear.
M: OK. Thank you.
(Text 2)
W: Country Hotel. What can we do for you, sir?
M: I’d like to reserve a table for ten.
W: Today or anytime else?
M: Of course today.
W: When, please?
M: At about 6:00 p.m. Oh, it must be a single room with an air conditioner.
W: Very good. but may I know your name, please?
M: Edison, Karl Edison.
W: OK. Mr. Edison, a table for ten in a single room with an air conditioner at about 6:00 p.m.
(Text 3)
M: Lucy, my new MP3 player seems to be missing. Did you move it?
W: No, I didn’t. Isn’t it right next to the computer?
M: No, and I don’t see it anywhere. I have the feeling that one of our party guests took it.
W: Really? What are you going to do now?
M: I’ll just tell my parents what has happened, I guess.
W: Then they’ll know you had people home without permission. Won’t they be angry about that?
M: Maybe. I wish I ’d done that from the start, instead of keeping it my secret. They’d have said no to a party, and the MP3 player would still be here.
(Text 4)
Are you a morning person or an evening person? That’s the question. When do you work best? For me, the answer is easy. I work best in the morning. All my creative work is done before lunch time. I get up at about 7:00, and then have breakfast at 7:30.I listen to the radio a bit and read the papers. And then I start to work. Usually I work from 8 until 11 but after that I’m useless. On a good day I write1500 words or more, sometimes 2000 words in the morning. Then after lunchI rest for 2 hours, or read. In the evening I like to relax, go to the pub or meet people. If you are tired, it shows the mind and body must be fresh.
